Certified Arborist Inspections

A certified arborist walks the property: hazard evaluation, tree health, and a free estimate for whatever the tree needs.

Lean, decay, cracks and roots

A hazard evaluation is a close read of the whole tree, trunk to root flare, and it begins with the question every homeowner is really asking: is this one going to come down on something? The arborist looks at which way the tree leans and whether that lean is old or new. A tree that has leaned for decades and grown to balance itself is a different case from one that tipped after last spring's rain.

From there the walk gets slower. Cracks in the trunk or at the union where two stems meet, fungus growing from the bark, hollow sounds when the trunk is tapped, and dead wood high in the crown each tell part of the story. Decay is often hidden, so a trunk that looks sound from the driveway can be carrying a rotten core. A felled hardwood cut through at the base often shows how large a pocket can sit behind healthy bark.

The roots get as much attention as the crown. Heaved soil on one side, cut or damaged roots from a past driveway or trench, and mushrooms at the base all point to a tree that has lost some of its footing. Where the tree stands matters too: a weak oak over a bedroom roof is a different problem than the same oak at the back of the lot.

Health, and what the crown is telling you

Health is a separate question from safety. A tree can be structurally sound and still be in decline, and the other way around. The arborist checks leaf size and color against what is normal for that species, how much of the crown is thin or bare, whether new growth is reaching out at the tips, and whether bark is peeling or the branches are dying back from the outside in.

Many problems start in the soil. Compacted ground over the roots, mulch piled against the trunk, and drainage that leaves the base soaked all wear a tree down slowly. Pests and disease get a look as well. Catching them early can mean a treatment plan or a change in care, instead of a removal two summers later.

You leave with a plain answer for each tree: leave it alone, care for it, trim it, or take it down. If a tree in Columbia or anywhere across Maury County is worth keeping, the evaluation says what it needs to stay that way.

The free estimate and what comes after it

The arborist looks at the trees and gives the estimate in the same visit, and the estimate is free. Call (931) 374-8450 or send the request form, and the office follows up within one business day to set a time for a certified arborist to walk the property with you.

What you get back is a recommendation tied to specific trees: this limb trimmed back, that stump ground out, this one removed in sections because the yard is tight. Some visits end with no work at all, because the tree is fine. If the news is bad, the crew that does the evaluation also has the bucket truck and the chipper to carry it out.

When work goes ahead, it is done by a licensed, bonded and insured crew under a satisfaction guarantee. Wood and debris are hauled away and recycled. If a storm hits before the walk-around, the 24/7 emergency line takes the call first and the inspection follows once everything is safe.
